Nicole Scherzinger’s romance in trouble?

Nicole Scherzinger’s romance with racing driver Lewis Hamilton is reportedly on the rocks.

The Pussycat Dolls singer has been dating the British Formula One ace for nearly three years, but they have reportedly not seen each other in three weeks and shelved plans to spend Christmas together.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Lewis and Nicole have had a few problems for a while now. They love each other dearly but have incredibly busy schedules.

“Nicole was in London last week and was desperate to hook up with Lewis but she was busy in the studio while he is on a European training camp and couldn’t come back.

“Hopefully after a month apart, they will come to their senses and give things another go.”

Despite the claims, a spokesperson for Lewis insisted the couple are “perfectly fine”.

Meanwhile, Nicole recorded the theme song to forthcoming musical ‘Love Never Dies’ – the sequel to the hugely popular ‘Phantom of the Opera’, by composer Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber - while in London.

A source said: "Andrew is a huge fan of Nicole and her voice. He has always said she could become one of the biggest stars on the planet with the right songs.”

Nicole Kidman's neighbours angry at planting of leylandii trees

The actress has had the cypress leylandii saplings, ranging from 4ft to 6ft tall, placed around her 140-acre Bunya Hill estate to shield it from onlookers.

The fast-growing trees can reach up to 20 metres high and eight meters wide, and have caused disputes between neighbours all over the world.

The picturesque $6 million five-bedroom property, built in the 1870s, is in a village called Sutton Forest, about 60 miles south-west of Sydney.

The actress, who lives in Nashville with her country singer husband Keith Urban, has boosted security there ahead of her sister Antonia's wedding to the financier Craig Marran, which is expected to take place at the retreat before the end of the year.

As well as the trees, she has also had an "ugly" green nylon fence erected by the main gate and an earth mound built to shield the property from the main road.

But it is the mammoth tree-planting project which has upset locals, who have been campaigning against leylandii for several years arguing they can grow to an immense height and turn into an eyesore.

Greg Barnsley, 49, whose property borders onto Bunya Hill said residents of the quiet town did not want the area ruined by the oversized trees.

"They grow to an enormous height," Mr Barnsley said. "Yes these ones are small now but they are going to be huge."

"They are out of character with the area, they are not even Australian natives.

"We respect that Nicole wants her privacy but if she wants trees let them be Australian ones.

"She could be gone in a couple of years and then we will be left with them forever."

While the dispute rages, Kidman, Urban and the couple's 18-month old daughter Sunday Rose have been staying in Sydney with Kidman's parents Anthony and Janelle.

The family is expected to move to the Bunya Hill property for the rest of the Christmas holidays.

Lady Gaga Picks Her Favorite Artists And Song Of 2009

Over the past few weeks, MTV News has been asking some of the biggest stars in music to name their favorite artists, songs and albums of the past year. And, not surprisingly, they all kept repeating the same two words: Lady Gaga

It's not exactly a surprise, considering that, over the past 12 months, Gaga was everywhere. Her hits topped the charts. Her tours wowed audiences. And her album (or, more specifically, albums) were in constant rotation on iPods everywhere. It's no stretch to say that in 2009, Lady Gaga was your favorite artist's favorite artist. She inspired them to write and record, to take their songs and tours to the next level. She pushed them to work harder, because they had to.

But who pushed her? We decided to find out, so on Saturday (December 19), hours before her Monster Ball stop in San Diego, MTV News sat down with the Lady herself, to get her favorite artists, albums and songs of 2009. As it turns out, she drew inspiration from the new and the old.

Artists of the Year
"First and foremost, my favorite artists of 2009 were my fans. They were my favorites because every song I did, they remade on their own, and every photograph that I took, they took their own version of it. And they remade my music videos, they designed clothes for me. They wrote poetry and made films and designed all sort of amazing paintings. They're just the most brilliant fans in the world. It's funny — my dad was at a show the other night and afterward he said, 'Do you think your fans are smart?' and I said, 'Oh hell yeah, my fans are smart,' and he said, 'You know what, I was thinking the same thing during the show.'

"My fans are f---ing really smart. They're art students, they're club kids, and some of them are just normal, top-40-listening kids in high school who don't feel like they have an identity yet and they're searching for one. But I would say that they're my favorite artists. Then I would say Semi Precious Weapons, who are on tour with me and are my very dear and close friends. And I really love Alphabeat, they're great and they're going to come out on tour with me next year."

Album of the Year
"I really liked Morrissey's new album, [Years of Refusal.] I listened to that one a lot."

Song of the Year
"Some of the songs I really liked ... hmm. Well, I really, really love Grace Jones' most recent album, [2008's Hurricane] and a song off it called 'Corporate Cannibal.

Shakira- She Wolf

Over the course of her relatively short career, Shakira has held a few identities, including Latin music star and “exotic” belly-shaking chanteuse. On “She Wolf,” Shakira distills all her personalities into one, re-emerging as a dance disco queen with a fresh, up-to-the-minute sound.

“She Wolf” (Epic) is delicious and enjoyable and – as it should go without saying for her – achingly sexy. One might be tempted to worry about how this album unfolds after realizing it starts with the sultry “She Wolf,” the video for which strikes a delicate position between shocking, daring, innocent and erotic. But yes, back to the song: It’s a stellar, bouncy, disco exploration of a woman’s inner freak, and it’s the kind of splendid first single often used to tempt people into buying an otherwise bad album. No. She follows that right up with “Did It Again,” the first of a few tracks containing beats supplied by Hampton Roads’ own Neptunes. They’re on fire again, and Shakira is, too, taking her voice from high to low in quick loops not unlike those incredible moves she does with her hips. “Long Time,” another Neptunes track, borrows the Latin kick from reggaeton, but the Neptunes truly kill it with “Why Wait,” which mixes the warm electro synth chords that made them innovators with Arabian-styled horns and strings; it’s stunningly fabulous and totally appropriate for Shakira.

The album isn’t perfect; it buckles midway with a few bland pop tracks, but regains its traction with the mid-tempo ballad “Gypsy” and then the terrific rock-styled “Mon Amour.” There, Shakira plays the part of the jealous, scorned lover who hopes the French vacation her ex is taking with his new squeeze is full of horrible service, smelly rooms and airport drama. It’s this kind of varied and often wild range of emotions she pulls off well throughout. And while she’s sometimes comically extreme, she never hits melodrama. Superb beats and enviable singing are a plus.

Katy Perry Celebrates an Early Christmas in Austria

The holiday season is upon us, which means that it's time to put the Bob Dylan Christmas album on your iPod, hit up your local mall to fight with other shoppers and gorge yourself on marzipan snowmen. Everybody celebrates this period differently, but for Katy Perry, the Christmas season is about dressing up in a sexy Santa outfit and treating fans in Austria to one of her traditionally balls-out concerts. After spending time snowboarding with boyfriend Russell Brand at the Silvretta Arena Ischgl-Samnaun ski resort, she took the stage in Ischgl and performed for 20,000 fans on Sunday night (November 29).

The show, which was the season-opening celebration for the resort, featured a hit-packed set and all of Perry's usual assortment of live gimmicks (including a giant glowing heart). The stage also had a pair of cannons re-creating the conditions outside the venue. "I hadn't realized they would have canons blasting snow onto the stage during the performance," she admitted from the stage. "It's f---ing cold!" As always, Perry bent over backwards to entertain her audience (quite literally, as you can see).

While many people will be taking time off over the next month, Perry will stay busy. She's still working on her second album (which includes collaborations with Rivers Cuomo, Greg Wells and Tricky Stewart) and her voice can currently be heard on the just-released MTV Unplugged (which features her cover of Fountains of Wayne's "Hackensack") as well as Timbaland's upcoming album Shock Value 2.

Beyonce Throws Jay-Z 's 40th celebration

Beyonce Threw her hubby a 40th birthday party in the Dominican Republic this weekend. Check out the details:

The party was a lavish intimate bash with an A-List celeb filled guest list–that went down Friday night. Beyonce arranged every detail of the party at Campo de Casa. The dinner party Friday night was elegant and everyone was asked to wear 1920’s or 1940’s era frocks. Beyonce asked Jay’s friends to shoot a video that was played at dinner telling Jay how they felt about him. We’re told Kevin Liles shot his mushy BFF speech weeks before the bash back in the states.

After dinner there were synchronized swimmers and fireworks. Then the party REALLY started with Jay was dancing the whole night…and Diddy in his usual place on the mic the whole night.

The guest list was packed with Mr. Carter’s close friends and family: Diddy & Kim Porter, Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz, Kanye & Amber Rose, Solange, Lyor Cohen & Tory Burch, Alex Rodriguez & Kate Hudson, Steve Stoute, Micheal Kyser, Dream Hampton, Rich Kleinman, John Menilly, Ty Ty, Jay Brown, and Chaka and Carline. And of course, Jay’s mother-in-law Miss Tina and cousin Angie were there too.

And the Beyonce’s good wife duties didn’t end there. The next day, Saturday, Beyonce invited everyone over to the couple’s villa for a lobster and steak brunch.

Madonna to Appear in Dolce & Gabbana Ad Campaign

“We were always afraid it would ruin our relationship,” contended Gabbana.

Not anymore. As part of a flurry of activity between the designers and Madonna, including the filming of the “Celebration” video inside Metropol, the designers’ Milanese runway venue, she agreed to appear in the Dolce & Gabbana spring campaign.

Steven Klein snapped the eight black-and-white, horizontal pictures in a former lay convent in uptown Manhattan. They will appear in groups of two or three to better display the reportage effect. A budget for the campaign, which breaks in February fashion titles, wasn’t available, though Gabbana described the investment as a “serious one.”

The shoot mirrors the mood of the designers’ sexy spring show, brimming with heritage Dolce & Gabbana staples and romantic accoutrements. “The collection is very Italian, very Sicilian,” said Gabbana. “It’s a return to our roots with a modern angle, so we asked Madonna to interpret it in a different and human way. We believe that people are ready for a new message.”

That message has Madonna playing a housewife, albeit a sensual one, carrying out her daily chores. Madonna appears holding a broomstick, washing dishes in a bubble-filled sink, eating spaghetti with her fingers and chopping vegetables, surrounded by lace curtains and tablecloths, dishcloths and old wooden furniture.

For the campaign, Madonna chose a number of looks, including crocheted tops and dresses, floral skirts and leopard spots, which she mismatched to her taste.

During a brainstorming session before the shoot (Gabbana marveled at how well versed Madonna is on old Italian movies), they all agreed on Luchino Visconti’s film “Bellissima” as an inspiration. Released in 1951, the neorealist film stars Anna Magnani and Walter Chiari.

In one shot, Madonna even appears as a latter-day Magnani, gazing off-camera with tear-smoldered cheeks. “She really cried, she really dipped into the part and took it very seriously,” gushed Gabbana.

Madonna 'celebration' rocks Madame Tussauds Hong Kong

The flash of cameras filled Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, as the attraction unveiled Madonna’s wax likeness, as well as hosting the “So You Think You Can Dance…Like Madonna?” competition, bringing an all-new interactive dance experience to guests just in time for the Christmas season.

During the event, the finalists got their groove on and went head to head live, before the attraction unveiled the superstar’s all-new look with the help of William Chan, one of the hottest local dance icons. The unveiling also marked the release of Madonna’s all-new greatest hits album “Celebration”, earlier in 2009.

“Madonna is undoubtedly the Queen of Pop, known for her high-energy dancing and singing that has rocked audiences and venues around the world. With the Christmas season fast approaching, our new interactive experience is set to immerse guests in excitement at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong like never before and help them celebrate the holidays with some unbelievable dancing fun,” said Bret Pidgeon, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Hong Kong and Shanghai.

“In addition to posing with Madonna in her all-new costume inspired by her Sticky and Sweet Tour 2009, guests can put on a variety of props such as dazzling top hats, colourful wigs or

flashy canes to transform into superstars themselves.”

Madonna’s wax figure will be on display in the Music Icon section, on her very own decked out stage. Dressed in a black ruffled jacket and frilly skirt, along with matching coloured gloves, boots and cane, Madonna’s wax counterpart is frozen in one of the singer’s signature poses with a microphone in one hand. Moving stage lights and a wall of multi-coloured lights will make guests feel as if they are centre stage with Madonna in front of thousands of adoring fan

The Bravery's Sam Endicott Adds a Man's Touch to Shakira's 'She Wolf'

The Bravery's Sam EndicottShakira had a hit on her hands earlier this fall with 'She Wolf,' the title track from her new album, but it turns out there was a rather unexpected he-man behind the song -- Sam Endicott of the Bravery. The frontman teamed up with producer John Hill, who also co-helmed the Bravery's new effort, 'Stir The Blood,' to write a trio of tracks for Shakira's latest LP.

"Shakira contacted him and said, 'I'd be interested to hear what you're working on,' and so he and I got together and made a few tracks and she wound up using three of them," Endicott tells Spinner. The duo managed to churn out 'She Wolf,' "Men on This Town' and 'Loba' for Shakira's new disc, but for those wanting details about the first song's lyrical content, they should ask the Colombian singer herself.

"She wrote all the lyrics to it, and I think she did a great job because they're really kooky and interesting," Endicott says. "They're unusual."

Endicott worked with Hill on the Shakira cuts at the same time 'Stir the Blood' was being recorded and he feels the material has some sisterly ties.

"For me, 'She Wolf' doesn't sound that different musically from a Bravery song. Everything I do for the Bravery is usually based around a bass line," he says. "I'm a bass player at heart. There's a lot of disco bass lines in our stuff and that's the same with 'She Wolf.'"

Endicott will spend much of 2010 on tour with his own group, but he revealed he's already continued his pop writing, penning a cut for another world-renowned blonde pop star with Hill.

"I did a track for the new Christina Aguilera album," Endicott says. "It's called 'Monday Morning.' We made the basis of it and then [producer, DJ] Switch was involved."

And it appears branching out as a mainstream songwriter is something Endicott plans to continue in the future.

"I'm very open-minded about making music," he says. "There are songs that I write that are from my heart and about my life and those become Bravery songs, but beyond that, I just really like making music and working with creative people. It doesn't really matter to me the genre as long as the music is interesting and creative."

Madonna gets domestic in new Dolce & Gabbana ad campaign

People.com has a sneak peek of Madonna’s new Steven Klein-shot ad campaign for Dolce & Gabbana, a series of black and white photos that feature Madge in the kitchen playing the role of busty housewife. The third-highest-grossing concert artist of the Oughts is shown washing the dishes, shredding lettuce, and digging into a bowl of pasta with her fingers.

There’s a variety of things going on in the campaign that please me. First, she’s on the verge of eating in two shots, which can’t hurt, given her rescued-greyhound physique of late. Second, she is seemingly unable to perform even the simplest domestic tasks without courting scandal: note the veggie photo (pictured here), in which her bazooming bosoms swoon beneath an enormous crucifix — exactly the sort of setup that tends to rile religious conservatives. (The breasts shall never touch the cross!)

Third, there is literally no reason whatsoever for Madonna to be in these pictures as opposed to some generic model, unless you start thinking about it, and then your brain slinks down the rabbit hole of symbolism involved in the Material Girl getting domestic just as Lady Gaga seems to have surmounted her provocateur pedestal. Finally, they continue the long and proud tradition of high-fashion advertorial photography in which I have absolutely no clue what exactly is being sold. Cookware? Wood paneling? Push-up bras? I mean, seriously, is anyone looking at the clothes, or just wondering what it would be like to live in a double-wide with a lady who once hitchhiked naked?

Jennifer Lopez's Has A 'Back-Up Plan' For Her Career: Check Out The Trailer For Her New Rom Com

By Matt Thompson

Fall in love. Get married. Have a baby. Is that the correct, only order to go by? You be the judge. "The Back-Up Plan" (out April 16, 2010) is about a woman (Jennifer Lopez) in her mid 30’s who is distressed because she has no children and hasn’t met “the one” yet. She tries to convince her friend Clive (Eric Christian Olsen) to be her “baby daddy,” to no avail, so she decides to have a baby through artificial insemination. Shortly after the procedure, she rushes into a cab when it’s raining. Unfortunately, the cab is already taken by a very handsome guy (Alex O'Loughlin). She leaves the cab boldly proclaiming she’s “not going to let him ruin her good mood.” Coincidentally, she runs into the same man multiple times afterward. They go on a few dates, share a few laughs and eventually start falling for each other. But here’s the tricky part, she fails to tell him that she’s pregnant with a baby. And the fun starts. Check out the trailer.

Between singing, dancing and falling over on stage, Jennifer Lopez has been doing it all lately. She has an album entitled Love? coming out next month. But J-Lo seems to be strolling down a new avenue with the rom com "The Back-Up Plan." This marks her first film in three years.

First Review of Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Love?’ Album

Come April 2010, Jennifer Lopez will officially be making her comeback on the music scene after almost three years in between materials. “Love?” is the name of the upcoming album and, as Rap-Up informs, it will stick to the same formula that the singer has employed in the past with so much success. That is to say, the album will be a hit by all means.

Rap-Up managed to get a hold of nine tracks that have, so far, made the cut for “Love?,” though not all of them are completed yet. Also, more songs will be added from now until April, when the material is scheduled for release. Still, overall, the material seems to be a certified winner, which will surely come to please fans, who have been recently showered with mostly negative reviews of the tracks that Lopez has already released, namely, “Fresh Out the Oven” and “Louboutins.”

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Jennifer Lopez sticks to her hitmaking formula on her seventh studio album ‘Love?’ While it’s not due until April, Rap-Up was one of the first media outlets to hear nine tracks from the superstar’s dance floor-ready project, four months prior to its release. J.Lo’s first album since becoming a mother features contributions from heavy hitters including Danja, Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, The Neptunes (‘Fresh Out the Oven’), Stargate (‘Story of My Life’), Tricky Stewart and The-Dream (‘Louboutins’), and Wynter Gordon,” the music-oriented e-zine writes.

“The follow-up to 2007’s ‘Brave’ is scheduled for release around the same time as Lopez’s romantic comedy ‘The Back-Up Plan,’ in theaters April 16. As the title implies, the album is a love roller coaster, taking you through the ups and downs of a relationship. Some of the tracks we previewed were not final mixes and may change between now and release, and more songs will be added,” the same publication goes on to say.

The tracks offered for a first listen include, as of now: “Everybody’s Girl,” “What Is Love,” “Starting Over,” “This Cannot Be Love,” “One Love,” “Keeper,” “Beautiful” and, of course, “Louboutins” and “Fresh Out the Oven.” For more on them, please see here and keep an eye on this space for more details on the album.

No Contest: Rihanna Downs Chris Brown

Chris Brown

Just think how many fewer albums Chris Brown would have sold had Walmart actually not (like the MechanicalDummy himself erroneously believed) stocked his album.

And just think how many more albums Chris Brown would have sold had he not beaten up his girlfriend earlier this year.

The R&B star's latest release, Graffiti, debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard charts this week, selling just 102,000 copies (by comparison, the week's No. 1, Susan Boyle's unstoppable I Dreamed a Dream, sold nearly six times as much: 582,000).

Team Rihanna will be pleased to know that her release last month, Rated R, easily bested her ex's. That album came into the charts at No. 3 with sales of 181,000 in its first week out.

Still, while Brown's debut may look paltry in comparison to other artists', as far as Brown debuts go, it wasn't all that bad.

Graffiti was Brown's second-biggest debut, beaten only by his 2007 album, Exclusive, which debuted at No. 4 with 294,000 copies.

But though Brown's year started off very, very, very badly, it's ending only marginally better, PR-wise.

On Monday, the singer peaced out of Twitter after throwing a hissy fit over his perceived slight by Walmart. After visiting a Connecticut outlet that didn't have his album in stock (but did have the latest from 12-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys!) he fell under the meltdown-inducing misapprehension that the retail giant was not on Team Chris.

"I'm tired of this s--t," he wrote on his now defunct account. "Major stores r blackballing my CD. Not stockin the shelves and lying to costumers."

Aw, Chris, don't drag the wardrobe department into this.

"What the f--k do I gotta do?" he went on. "The industry can kiss my ass."

Just as long as he's aware the customers aren't going to.

Meanwhile, SuBo continued her domination on the charts, putting her 2009 total at 1.8 million and counting. Should her sales continue apace, she has a good chance of upsetting Taylor Swift's Fearless—steadily but slowly adding to its 2.7 million copies—as the year's best-seller.

Also capping off a banner week is Glee. Fresh off the show's Golden Globe nominations, the first soundtrack volume from the show shot up to No. 3 on the charts.

Miley Cyrus’ personal attacks on Madonna and Jolie – was that intentional or innocent?

The 17-year old teenage pop sensation Miley Cyrus has recently slammed two of the biggest Hollywood celebrities for something she herself does! Puzzled? So are we… Here are the details… google_protectAndRun("ads_core.google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad);Miley Cyrus spoke in the Irish TV show Xpose that she didn’t like the idea of kids being taken in front of the camera without their approval. She continued that Angelina Jolie and Madonna are in a habit of taking their kids in public eye without the consent of the children. Miley said that she “really disagrees with it” that Madonna and Jolie are parading their kids for publicity at such a young age! But hold on Miley… as far as we know you too came in front of the camera at a young age of 11 for Hannah Montana! Isn’t it? Then what made you think otherwise after six years? We really wonder! We don’t usually criticize people for doing something which we had done earlier, right? It is fact that Madonna has been photographed many times with her 3 children. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have also taken their six kids for many magazine photoshoots for charity purpose. But how does Miley know that the kids didn’t want to be clicked? How come she is so sure that the kids were taken in front ofthe camera without their consent? C’mon Miley, even you are young, and you too enjoy publicity. Isn’t it? Then why so much fuss? Oh you meant consent right? But weren’t you spotted with your kid sister recently? And that too teaching dirty dance moves? Well…what explanation do you have for that? We hope your comments were all unintentional and came out as innocently as your face shows!

Britney Spears Posts List of Most Ridiculous Stories of 2009

Britney Spears has had a fabulous year, that much is for sure: despite reports stating the contrary, the singer has launched and carried through an international tour, got her personal life back on track and is even reported to be working on a new album already. However, reports about both her personal life and her much mediated comeback had not once ceased to make headlines, which has prompted her to post a list of the 75 most ridiculous stories this year.

Among them, fans find the rumor that her own father was drugging her to keep her under control and not allow her to ask for the conservatorship over her own person to end, stories about her romantic liaisons to anyone from her manager to dancers, a story that a movie was being made after her and the much-mediated Australia “scandal,” where fans were reportedly upset with her for lip-synching. Stories about breakdowns, lewd behavior and puerile demands while on the road are also included in the top 75.

“There were more then 13,000 stories written about Britney in 2009. We ranked the ones we believe were the most ridiculous. Either because they were factually inaccurate, because they reported the patently absurd, or because we believe they are simply offensive to the sensibilities. Without further ado, we present the TOP 75 Bull[expletive] Britney Spears stories reported in the media this year,” the introduction to the top reads on the singer’s official website.

A simple look through the entries that have made the cut into the top 75 reveals that most of these stories originated from tabloids, which cited unnamed “reliable” sources to back them up, and that were later on picked up by the international media. Others stemmed from unverified tidbits reported by gossip blogger Perez Hilton and other celebrity blogs of the kind. Names like OK! Magazine, National Enquirer and Daily Mail are the most common in the list.

To have a look at Britney Spears’ year in rumors, please refer here. Arm yourself with patience and then have some fun – the mere fact that these stories are included here means they’re not true, they say.

Beyonce Knowles' Name Change

Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z are to change their names.

The couple, who married in April 2008, are to take on both of their respective surnames in order to keep the 'Crazy In Love' star's parental line from dying out.

Jay-Z - whose real name is Shawn Carter - will now be known as Shawn Knowles-Carter, while Beyonce is to become Beyonce Knowles-Carter.

A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "They want to keep Knowles because Beyonce's parents didn't have any sons and they're keen to keep the name going strong, especially if they don't produce any children themselves."

Earlier this week, the Knowles family suffered a blow when it was announced that Beyonce's parents Tina and Mathew would be divorcing after 29 years of marriage.

In October, rumours surfaced that Mathew may have been unfaithful, with a paternity suit filed by Alexandra Wright claiming he was the father of her unborn child - an allegation he has denied.

However, in a statement the estranged couple - who also have a daughter, Solange - claimed that the divorce would not be "an ugly, messy fight" and they would continue working together amicably.

Shakira revels in fierce womanhood on 'She Wolf'

NEW YORK — Ask Shakira about the canine title of her new album, She Wolf, and a decidedly feline smile sweeps across her face.

"Every woman has a she-wolf inside her," the Colombian-born singer/songwriter says. "We all have our secret desires and forbidden dreams, and I'm going through a phase where I want to capture more of that sensuality in my work. For the first time, I'm talking about those things with a little more freedom."

Mind you, Shakira, 32, felt free enough back in 2005 to call her last album Oral Fixation Vol. 2. (The Spanish-language companion, Fijacion Oral Vol. 1, arrived the same year.) But she says She Wolf was "written more from a woman's perspective. That's because I feel more like a woman now, and more like the owner of my life."

That's partly because of age and experience. "I have wonderful friends who are still looking for the right man. I see the struggles women face, trying to be good professionals, to be girlfriends and mothers, to look good and do their jobs well. Dealing with all the pressures and demands from society, it's not easy."

Shakira didn't exclude male collaborators in pursuing her gynocentric vision. Pharrell Williams and John Hill helped write and produce several tracks, and Wyclef Jean– who teamed with Shakira for 2006's smash single Hips Don't Lie– turns up on Spy. Lil Wayne makes a guest appearance on the single Give It Up to Me, No. 29 and rising on USA TODAY's top 40 airplay chart.

"I wanted a very upbeat album, to use dance and electronic (textures) while still keeping a fusion of influences from all over the world." She's part Lebanese, and "being a mutt, I was drawn to those different cultures – it's in my DNA."

Shakira's fans are equally eclectic, says Billboard senior chart manager Keith Caulfield. That makes it tricky to predict her album sales.

"She appeals to younger people, (and) that audience can be satisfied with a track or two," he says. "But she's also a global superstar with a core base she can count on to buy the album the first week. When you're parodied by Taylor Swift on Saturday Night Live, you have a pretty huge following."

Shakira has used that popularity as a platform for philanthropy. In 2006, she helped launch the foundation Latin America in Solidarity Action (better known by the Spanish acronym ALAS, which means "wings") to combat child poverty.

She has built five schools in her country and is raising money for another. "I've seen (education) transform the lives of not only children, but whole families," she says.

"Developing more as a woman" has enabled her to see things more from a mom's perspective. "A she-wolf isn't just a sexual individual; it's someone who strives to realize who she is and defends and nurtures her children. I feel closer to motherhood now, maybe on the threshold of it."

But while Shakira has a long-term boyfriend, Argentine lawyer Antonio de la Rua, she's not ready to settle down completely. "I'm too young to get married," she says, laughing. "I want children first. I'm getting ready to reproduce."

Not quite yet, though. "I feel like a mother who has just delivered a baby with this album" – and she plans to have another, a Spanish-language project, next year. "That's absorbing all my energy for now."

Susan Boyle Thwarts Off New Releases

Susan Boyle continues her winning streak, fending off all those who cross her path. New releases from Chris Brown, Gucci Mane, Snoop Dogg, Timbaland, and the Clipse were no match for the “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up. Boyle’s debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, holds onto the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for the third week in a row, pulling in another 582,000 copies. It is expected to remain No. 1 next week despitenew releases from Alicia Keys and Robin Thicke. Chris Brown returns to the charts with Graffiti, his first album since 2007, which debuts at No. 7, selling 102,000 in its first week. The numbers mark Brown’s lowest debut of his career. His sophomore album, Exclusive, entered at No. 4 with 294,000 units, while his self-titled debut opened at No. 2 in 2005 with 154,000. Meanwhile, Brown’s ex-girlfriend Rihanna slides down the charts. Her fourth effort Rated R fell from No. 14 to No. 25 with 50,000 in its third week of release. Not even prison can hold down Gucci Mane, whose Asylum/Warner Bros. Records debut The State vs. Radric Davis locks in at No. 10 (90,000). Also new to the charts this week are Snoop Dogg’s Malice N Wonderland, which bows at No. 21 (59,000), Timbaland’s Shock Value II at No. 32 (39,000), and the Clipse’s ’Til The Casket Drops at No. 41 (31,000).

Album Preview: Jennifer Lopez – ‘Love?’

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Jennifer Lopez sticks to her hitmaking formula on her seventh studio album Love? While it’s not due until April, Rap-Up.com was one of the first media outlets to hear nine tracks from the superstar’s dance floor-ready project, four months prior to its release. J.Lo’s first album since becoming a mother features contributions from heavy hitters including Danja, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, The Neptunes (“Fresh Out the Oven”), Stargate (“Story of My Life”), Tricky Stewart and The-Dream (“Louboutins”), and Wynter Gordon. The follow-up to 2007’s Brave is scheduled for release around the same time as Lopez’s romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan, in theaters April 16. As the title implies, the album is a love roller coaster, taking you through the ups and downs of a relationship. Some of the tracks rap-up previewed were not final mixes and may change between now and release, and more songs will be added.

1. “Everybody’s Girl”
Produced by Mike Caren, Written by Wynter Gordon

It’s hard having a private life when you’re one of the most famous entertainers in the world. J.Lo questions whether her man is capable of loving her under the intense glare of the spotlight. “Can you love somebody when their everybody’s girl?” she asks over the slick uptempo production, while the hook repeats: “Can you love, can you love, can you love a girl?” One of the standout tracks, this could easily be a single.

2. “What Is Love”
Produced by D’Mile, Written by Wynter Gordon

A version of this song leaked online earlier this year. The latest version has been mixed and hits harder with added drums. There is a “What Is Love (Part 2)” produced by Jean Baptiste that may or may not makethe album.

3. “Starting Over”
Produced by Danja, Written by Wynter Gordon

Jenny from the Block describes the hardships of getting back in the game after a breakup. “I’m afraid of starting over,” she sings over Danja’s fast-paced, galloping beat, while admitting she’s “still in love” with the man she left. “It’s like my whole existence he holds in his hands.”

4. “This Cannot Be Love”
Produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins

The beginning sounds like the chords from another Darkchild joint, Brandy and Monica’s duet “The Boy Is Mine.” It quickly picks up the pace with an electro-pop beat and speedy hook (“This cannot be love, this can’t be love, this can’t be love,” she repeats). J.Lo wonders whether true love exists. “How could something that felt so right turn so wrong? … I need to know right now,” she demands. The production gets more aggressive towards the end.

5. “One Love”
Produced by D’Mile, Written by A-Plus

“Took a shot with a bad boy from the block,” she croons on the leaked track. It won’t take long for listeners to make the connection to Sean “Diddy” Combs. “Mr. Wrong, he plays his part,” she says of her former music mogul boyfriend. But J.Lo is on to the next one, in search for that one true love of a lifetime. She counts her famous lovers by the numbers, #3 being Ben Affleck (“Came and swept me off my feet/ Went nowhere, but kept the ring/ Once again I’m lonely”) and her current husband Marc Anthony (“#4, you sang to me, but I’m not sure … Made me want to try once more and I couldn’t say no.”)

6. “Keeper”
Produced by Danja, Written by Britney Bereal and Luke Boyd

After much searching, J.Lo finally finds Mr. Right. The beat is somewhat reminiscent of T.I.’s “Hell of a Life,” which Danja also produced. “You give me so much love, you keep it locked down,” she sings on the bouncy hook. “It doesn’t matter what they tell me … That boy’s a keeper.” One of our favorites. Danja contributed another track called “Love and War” that was not played.

7. “Beautiful”
Produced by Mike Caren, Written by Chris Sernel

A guitar-driven ballad that sounds like it was made for a movie. In fact, it may be used during the end credits for The Back-Up Plan. “Some days I feel beautiful, just not today,” she sings on the Ryan Tedder-esque production.

“Louboutins,” the first single helmed by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, as well as the Pitbull-assisted, Neptunes-produced buzz record “Fresh Out the Oven” will also be onthe album.

JoJo Reveals New Album Details

In our exclusive interview with JoJo, the singer, who most recently collaborated with Timbaland on Shock Value II, moves past the label drama and looks toward the future. Now signed to Blackground/Interscope Records, the 19-year-old Bostonian is gearing up for the release of her third album in 2010 and already has Timbaland and Pharrell in her corner. Plus, she clues us in on the project’s direction, her plans for the leaked records, and her mixtape with Clinton Sparks and Chester French. “I wanted to do something that people would be like, ‘Wow, this girl has come a long way and she’s really taking the reins,’” she says of her new music. “I wanted people to get a sense of who I am.”

T.I. Released from Prison, Moved to Halfway House

T.I.’s family and friends got an early Christmas present on Tuesday (Dec. 22) when the rapper came one step closer to freedom. The King of the South, born Clifford Harris Jr., was released from prison after about seven months and will serve the remainder of his sentence in a correctional facility near Fulton County Airport in his hometown of Atlanta, Ga., according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. His sentence is currently scheduled to end March 26, 2010, according to the Bureau of Prisons. His attorney, Steve Sadow, confirmed his client’s release to the newspaper, saying it is “not out of the ordinary.” In May, Tip began serving a 366-day sentence at a low-security federal prison in Forrest City, Ark., on weapons charges related to purchasing machine guns and silencers.

Adam Lambert Is on Diet

Wanting to remain in shape while he is promoting his debut album "For Your Entertainment", Adam Lambert reveals to Fox News, "I'm on such a diet now." The openly gay singer continues saying, "I want to stay in great shape so no candy for me."

The 27-year-old "American Idol" star then relates that topic to general opinion that people have on someone's physical appearance. "Everyone should get out of the mirror, that's not what matters," he says. "We are programmed in society to be so hard on ourselves and our appearance."

In another Adam Lambert news, he has been spotted on Sunday night, December 20 filming a music video for "Whataya Want From Me", the second single from his November 23 release "For Your Entertainment". Alexandra Burke Will Be Home for Christmas

Three days to Christmas, Alexandra Burke says she is looking forward to spend the festive season with her family. "I'll be at home with the family in London. I couldn't be anywhere else. We all cook and have family meals together when we can so it's going to be a great day," says the R 'n' B songstress.

"I don't want any presents, I'm just happy being with them," she gushes. "That sounds cheesy doesn't it? OK, clothes I guess. A girl can never have too many shoes and clothes!"

Though so, Burke says she is still figuring out on what presents to be given to her loved ones. "I'm actually still thinking about what to get them. I'm still madly saving to buy a house for my mother but of course I'll treat them," says the 21-year-old singing sensation.

Alexandra Burke, best known as the winner of "The X Factor" fifth series, has released her debut album "Overcome" since October. Earlier this month, she premiered the music video for the set's second single "Broken Heels".

'X-Men: First Class' Will Use Some of 'Magneto' Story

Bryan Singer has shared some information about the idea of his upcoming movie project "X-Men: First Class". Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the phone, the helmer has revealed that the next installment of "X-Men" film franchise will include some parts of "Magneto" story and might supersede the film about the super-powered villain.

"This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto," he stated. Singer then went on explaining, "It might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor [Xavier] and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust."

Previously, Singer has told Variety that "First Class" will revolve around "the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn". Moreover, the filmmaker teased, "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain."

Bryan Singer first confirmed his involvement in "X-Men: First Class" on December 16 while attending "Avatar" premiere in Los Angeles. A day later, it was known that 20th Century Fox has hired Jamie Moss to replace Josh Schwartz as the scribe. Meanwhile, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are set to produce this sci-fi movie.

First Teaser Trailer for 'Sex and the City 2' Unleashed

Warner Bros. Pictures has shared the first preview to "Sex and the City 2" by releasing a teaser trailer. Narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw Preston, the video, which was debuted by MySpace, explains the new film will take place two years after the end of the first movie. Here, she and her friends will bring their glamor lives to a place that is far away from their New York City homes.

Beside Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis will return to the "Sex and the City" sequel to reprise their roles as Samantha Jones, Miranda Hobbes Brady, and Charlotte York Goldenblatt respectively. Additionally, the film will feature a cameo by Miley Cyrus.

The official synopsis for the film has been kept under wraps, but it reportedly will follow Carrie, whose marriage to Mr. Big is put to a test after they lose everything in a financial scam. Directed by Michael Patrick King, the drama comedy movie is planned to be released in the U.S. on May 28, 2010.

Anne Hathaway Is Not Spider-Man's New Love Interest

Spider-Man will not be seen hooking up with a new girl in the next film. Despite report that Anne Hathaway has been tapped to replace Kirsten Dunst in "Spider-Man 4" as the franchise's leading lady, her representative has told Gossip Cop that the news is not true, saying "It's not accurate - there is no deal in place for her to be in ['Spider-Man 4']." Moreover, the site claimed there won't be any negotiations with Hathaway because the film's script has not been completed.

Words that Hathaway will be the new Spider-Man's love interest were first outed by Star Magazine. According to some sites, the publication reported that Dunst, who has signed to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson, will be written out in the fourth film.

The magazine further claimed a source told them Dunst's character would probably be killed off in the upcoming "Spider-Man" film. "Anne will take over as Peter Parker's new love interest for this project and for 'Spider-Man 5' and 6 which are being written now," the source was quoted as saying. "Anne's in L.A. doing a lot of meetings on the movie, because filming is right around the corner."

This is not the first time Hathaway is rumored to be cast for the next installment of the superhero film franchise. In early December, the "Rachel Getting Married" star was reported being wanted to be one of the villains in the follow-up to "Spider-Man 3". She was said to be the top choice for Felicia Hardy, who will transform into a brand new superpowered figure called the Vulturess. However, both Columbia Pictures and the actress have not released any statement regarding the news.

"Spider-Man 4" is produced by Avi Arad, Grant Curtis and Laura Ziskin. Sam Raimi will return to the helmer position in this movie, which is targeted for May 6, 2011 release date in the U.S. Tobey Maguire is set to reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and he has previously informed that the principal photography is scheduled to be kicked off in February or March 2010.

The depicter of Hermione Granger, who is currently studying at Brown University in Rhode Island, has just announced on her newly launched Christmas site that she has returned from the U.S. to go back on the film's set in England.

"Hi everyone. I've just returned from Brown where I've had the most amazing first term and now I'm back filming Harry Potter over the Christmas holidays," the actress wrote on her Christmas mini site. She then added, "I've loved being in the States but it's so nice to be back at home with family and friends for Christmas."

The shooting for the last installment of "Harry Potter" film franchise was kicked off in February. Most recently, it was reported that the yearlong production, which was planned to be finished in April 2010, has been extended for about two months and is now scheduled to be wrapped in June 2010.

Top CDs of 2009: Maxwell, Jay-Z, Jamie Foxx and more

The R&B year in music had its highs and lows, and 2009 may end on a high note with December releases by Robin Thicke and Alicia Keys. For me, the voice of 2009 was Maxwell. His BLACKsummers' night was pure, soulful and lyrically raw. Maxwell's CD of substance sits atop my list of favorite music in 2009.
The rest of the best continue to dominate my iPod and compete for my attention on any given day.Jay-Z, The Blueprint 3. Those who say hip-hop is a young man's game don't understand that Jay-Z's blueprint for success lies in clever lyrics, top-notch beats and sheer mass appeal. You can't knock Jay-Z's hip-hop hustle.Jamie Foxx, Intuition. One part party, the other part cool, Foxx had listeners singing and dancing to "Blame It" and tearing up to "Overdose." It's time to take Foxx the singer/musician seriously.India.Arie, Testimony Vol. 2: Love & Politics. There's no flash, no pretense from India.Arie. She reminds you of Mother Earth as she strums on her guitar. This year, the songstress continued her award-winning formula of infusing folk, funk and soul.Ryan Leslie, Ryan Leslie. This Harvard grad is an ambitious fellow, having released two CDs in one year. However, his self-titled debut is a CD worth getting excited about thanks to the infectious music and catchy lyrics in "Addiction, You're Fly" and the hilarious "Gibberish."Mariah Carey, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. My feeling of trepidation about listening to Carey's 2009 CD evaporated quickly after I pressed play. Tunes including "H.A.T.E.U." and interlude "Languishing" show why Carey's chops continue to be golden.Keri Hilson, In A Perfect World. I was slow to warm to Hilson, but once I did, she earned heavy rotation in the CD carousel thanks to "Slow Dance" and "Get Your Money Up." Her pipes make her an R&B and pop singer to watch.Laura Izibor, Let the Truth Be Told. Soulful and Irish, Izibor is a funky siren. A lounge singer on "The Worst is Over" and Angie Stone-esque on "Yes (I'll Be Your Baby)," the debut from Izibor is darn good music.Jadakiss, The Last Kiss. Even with radio-friendly tunes including "By My Side" featuring Ne-Yo and "Can't Stop Me," there is nothing warm and fuzzy about this 18-cut opus thanks to tracks such as "Cartel Gathering" and "One More Step." His voice is still raspy and he still has that hardcore swagger.Charlie Wilson, Uncle Charlie. That's right, I like Uncle Charlie. He's still smooth and "There Goes My Baby" is proof positive that the former Gap Band lead singer has still got it. He even teams up with T-Pain and Jamie Foxx on "Supa Sexxy." Yup, Uncle Charlie's still got it.

Madonna crowned most famous celebrity of the decade

Madonna has been crowned the most famous celebrity of the decade with more articles written about her than anyone else. The 51-year-old star was the focus of more than 45,000 stories since 2000. Her nearest rival was Robbie Williams – with just under 28,000 newspaper mentions. The celebrity of the decade survey was conducted by Liv, the UK’s first online TV channel.
Britney Spears and David and Victoria Beckham make up the rest of the top five. But this year no one could compete with king of pop Michael Jackson who was easily the most talked about star. The tragic legend was the focus of 6,838 articles – covering both his planned comeback concerts and his untimely death in June. Meanwhile the award for most-improved celebrity goes to Simon Cowell who garnered just 18 stories in 2000 – but by this year was the written about over 6,000 times.

Alicia Keys named top R&B artist of decade

NEW YORK (Billboard) - With seven No. 1s on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally and four consecutive chart-toppers on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Alicia Keys walks off as Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the decade.

The singer's 2001 debut album, Songs in A Minor, reigned over Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums for six weeks and launched a pair of top 10 singles, including the multiformat smash "Fallin'."

Keys followed Songs in A Minor with The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003), Unplugged (2005) and As I Am (2007). With the exception of her third offering, each set ranks in the top 40 of the decade's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. On Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Keys' No. 1 singles have led for 41 chart weeks, more than any other artist. Among them, "No One" and "Like You'll Never See Me Again" combined for 17 consecutive weeks at No. 1.

Keys' dominance reflects the broader picture of the era's top-ranked acts. Straight-ahead R&B artists like Keys, Beyonce and Ne-Yo fare better than rap acts on the all-encompassing top artist ranking, despite being responsible for fewer than half of the decade's top 50 R&B/hip-hop albums. R&B acts account for 31 of the decade's top 50 artists, while rap acts, led by Jay-Z at No. 2, round out the remaining slots.

R&B's grip of the Top Artists list is buoyed by its greater appeal on adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio stations. Due to broader airplay across multiple formats of radio, R&B songs generally enjoy a longer life span and are more successful on the chart. Since 2000, no rap song has spent more than nine weeks at No. 1 or more than 56 chart weeks on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Meanwhile, R&B singles have tallied nine leaders with at least 10 weeks at No. 1 and eight songs that spent at least 60 weeks on the chart. During the decade, "Be Without You" by Mary J. Blige established the record for the most weeks at No. 1 since 1958 (15).

All is not lost for rap. Of the aforementioned Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, rap holds seven of the top 10 positions. Jay-Z is the genre's Top Album Artist of the decade with 10 No. 1s, the most for any artist.

Lady Gaga at Nokia Theatre L.A Live

"A year ago this month I was opening for Natasha Bedingfield and the New Kids on the Block -- at this theater," said Lady Gaga on Monday night during the first of her three sold-out performances at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. She was posing as usual, her body elegantly contorted to show off a dazzlingly weird outfit. But she was also smiling, cracking a warm and surprisingly unaffected grin.

Gaga has arrived. She knows it, even when she sprawls on the floor in her cruelly shiny black bustier and declares herself a gothic Tinkerbell, in danger of dying unless her fans scream. They all know it too; they arrived Monday in homemade versions of those signature haute-art costumes and danced and screamed throughout the nearly two-hour show with the fervor of those whose team is headed for a championship.

Their loyalty and sense of community is a major theme of the Monster Ball tour, which celebrates the supernatural power of the pop headliner while mulling over its validity.

This is Lady Gaga, though, so the cultural theory is dressed up in red vinyl and crushed-rhinestone glitter, set to the beat of hits such as "LoveGame" and "Bad Romance," and fleshed out by dancers in white bodysuits or black feathers and by the singer-dancer-writer-clotheshorse herself.

She began the evening alone onstage, dressed in a lightbulb-festooned cat suit behind a graph-paper screen that made her look huge and vaguely robotic. As the show progressed, she sported crow feathers, a disco-ball hump and a red leather bikini, each costume meant to both fulfill and subvert various pop clichés.

The Monster Ball is an invigoratingly ambitious show, executed with vigor by its star and her expressive dancers. It offers a few musical wows, especially when Gaga sits (or stands or crouches in yogic contortions) at the piano. But like the artist herself, it's a whole package. There are provocative films -- in one, Lady Gaga wears a series of face-covering "gimp masks," while another has the brunet Gaga vomiting a sky-blue stream onto her blond alter ego -- and enough props, costumes and lights to make this a rare multimedia experience for such a relatively small venue.
Since the tour's first American date in Boston several weeks ago, when I first saw it, Gaga and her collaborators have made some small but significant changes, perfecting the pacing and execution of many numbers. She's also worked on her patter, luxuriating in it in ways that made the show feel intimate despite all the bells and whistles, and adding new signature lines about music being free, her fans being sexy and this show being one big act of carnal love.

The Rapunzel-like wig she wore in "Paparazzi" has been replaced by a smaller one that visually links her live performance to the bondage imagery in the film that precedes it. Subtle details seemed to have been fleshed out, like certain poses that evoked Catholic saints or macho hard-rockers. It's also possible, though, that I missed these details upon first seeing the show. It's so packed with ideas and images that some are bound to slip by without making a full impact.

Gaga is still working on linking her visions to an underlying narrative. She speaks her messages loud and clear, but the singer and her troupe's striking choreography didn't always communicate as clearly. The Nokia's big screens revealed a little stubble on her underarms and her occasional reliance, while executing difficult moves, on what seemed like a backing track. She's still balancing the confrontational rocker inside with the fabulous pop star.

At 23, Gaga is just beginning the life's work she takes so seriously. "This is our first date," she said to the crowd, "so I may not go all the way." Then she added an off-color declaration of freedom that shows one way this young modernizer of classic pop themes "works blue."

But that's just one color Gaga has in her wardrobe. We have years to see her mix and match, cut and shred and bedazzle more.

Madonna the Idol

Madonna the Idol
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jonathon_Hardcastle]Jonathon Hardcastle

It's been said that you achieve true fame if the world knows you by just one name. Madonna Louise Cicccone, or else Madonna, kept just one name but reinvented her image countless times, becoming one of the most successful performers of all times. Educated in Catholic schools as a child, Madonna danced her way to a four year scholarship at the University of Michigan and then New York's Alvin Ailey School. After recording her debut album in 1983, her rise was meteoric, aided by the popularity of MTV, as she shocked and dared the public with her visible black lacy brassieres, bare midriff, outspokenness about virginity, abortion and out-of-wedlock births.

Madonna was born in Bay City, Michigan, the eldest of eight children (surely an error here as she is the eldest daughter, but third eldest child). Her father, Tony, was an engineer at Chrysler, her mother, whose name she was given, a housewife. Later, the family was to move south to Pontiac where she shared a room with two sisters. As a girl, Madonna spent her summers working in her father's vegetable garden weeding and spraying insecticide, or she was sent to her grandparents' house in Pennsylvania where she would be expected to work on the house and garden. The regime was rooted in instilling ethical work.

The family was devoutly Catholic. On Good Friday, her mother would place a purple cloth over all the religious pictures and statues in the house. This was before she fell ill with breast cancer, which would take her life when Madonna was six. Like many children who lose a parent, Madonna expected her mother to return. But nobody talked about it. For years it seemed that way. Three years later, her father married again, this time to the family housekeeper who never acknowledged Madonna as her mother did. Going t church before school, doing housework that was assigned by dad's chore chart, and no TV. This, incidentally, is her top tip for successful parenthood; no TV. Madonna was expected to defrost the freezer, wash the dishes, baby sit, and vacuum. She was a voracious reader and loved the stories her mother told her about a garden involving vegetables and a rabbit.

Like many teenagers, she knew that she would leave for the big city as quickly as she could. She says that she knew she wanted to leave Michigan from the age of five. She lasted one term at her Home-state University on a dance scholarship. Her heart wasn't in it. Even though she'd never visited, there was really only one place for her: New York, the true home of the ambitious. She arrived, in her late teens, at La Guardia airport and took a taxi to Times Square. She had no money or connections and lived hand to mouth, eventually settling in a tenement on the Lower East Side at 4th and Avenue B. Every weekend she went dubbing in search of A&R personnel and DJs who might be able to assist her career. She recalls dancing to 'Don't You Want Me' by the Human League at New York's famous Danceteria club. With her first royalty paycheck, she bought a synthesizer and a bike which she had to carry up all six flights to her new apartment, a loft on Broome and West Broadway. Deep down she also carried much resentment about her family, was often unhappy and relied greatly on music, which she has written was 'a vehicle for transcending misery (the story of my life)' to get her through thin times.

Anyway, it is a pretty strange thing to sit and think about the fact that Madonna is one of the most famous women in the world. Fame is the defining aspect of her life, even more than her music, style, or the movies. Madonna will be remembered for being one of the most relentlessly self-realized people of the century. Along with Monroe and Ali, Madonna will be remembered for defining the times by inventing and changing and promoting herself with ambition and, in so doing, providing us with a way of understanding ourselves and remembering what we used to dance to, who we used to be.
